CORONAVIRUS: NO WORK, NO INCOME, NO FOOD

India was in complete lockdown during the Coronavirus epidemic. The results of this lockdown meant that people  suddenly lost their jobs and could not go out. The families in Jarul Trust are very poor, they do not have bank accounts or savings, and they have large families. Even a small emergency causes a problem for them.  The Corona Virus  brought them to a very bad situation.

 

We  distributed food parcels to our families.  Each food package contained 25 kg of rice, 10 kg of flour, sugar, tea, dal, oil, spices, and soap. These ingredients enabled them to cook healthy meals for about one month.  At that time, we received news that when the families saw our team members coming to their homes carrying food, they felt so much relief and happiness. Many of them were only eating bread and potatoes once a day, and they were all feeling great tension, and worrying how they will continue to feed their families.  

The combination of worry, lack of food, restricted movement, large families all staying together every day in a tiny home, is a recipe for many other negative social issues to occur. Domestic violence, child abuse, alcoholism are common events in ordinary times, but during Coronavirus, the situation was extraordinary and unprecedented, and these problems were multiplied.

 

Our food parcels eased anxiety, brought a smile to faces, and filled bellies.  As the nationwide lockdown got extended, we made further food distributions, and in this way, all our families got through the Pandemic and have emerged at the other end able to build up their lives again.
